From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A 3-year-old boy who spent a bone-chilling night lost in rugged hills after wandering away from his home was released from a hospital Saturday. Steven Freitas Jr. was reported in excellent condition when he was released from Children’s Hospital, said Betsy Nagler, a nurse. The boy wandered away from his home Thursday afternoon in San Ramon while playing in his front yard. He was found Friday morning huddled under a fiberglass sign on a ranch about a mile away. Temperatures during the night were in the low 40s, but felt like the 30s with the wind chill. Steven was rushed by helicopter to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where officials said his body temperature was 72 degrees. He was transferred to Children’s, where he received intravenous solutions and was placed on a warming bed.
