SURROGACY
“And Baby Makes Four” inaccurately characterizes the California Legislature as being “silent” on the issue of surrogate parenting. In 1989, the Joint Legislative Committee on Surrogate Parenting appointed an 18-member advisory panel of experts in a variety of related fields to thoroughly review the legal, ethical, social and practical questions regarding commercial and non-commercial surrogate parenting.
Last November, the panel presented its findings to the committee. Twelve of the 18 members concluded that “voluntary, unpaid surrogate parenting arrangements should be allowed and should proceed consistent with other adoption practices.”
Many find the “commodification” of women and children to be abhorrent and who believe that there are just some things that shouldn’t be for sale.
