COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Chavez Shuts Down Rice; Titans Get Seven Unearned Runs in 7-2 Victory

Paco Chavez allowed five hits in seven innings as Cal State Fullerton defeated Rice, 7-2, in a nonconference baseball game Sunday in Houston.

Chavez (1-0) didn’t allow any runs. Chris Robinson pitched the final two innings, allowing two runs in the ninth.

The Titans (6-10) took advantage of five errors and all seven runs were unearned. Steve Sisco had three hits, including a triple, and Matt Hattabaugh and Frank Charles had two hits each for Fullerton, which won twice in the three-game series.

Sisco, Charles, Phil Nevin, Craig Fairbrother and David Ayala each had one run batted in for Fullerton.

In the Pacific-10 wrestling championships:

Cal State Fullerton finished fourth overall in the conference meet at Stanford. Five Titan wrestlers qualified for the NCAA championships, led by heavyweight David Jones, who won his division with a 6-3 victory over Mike Anderson of Arizona State.

Arizona State won the team title with 112 points. Cal State Bakersfield (101.5) was second, Oregon (92.25) third and Fullerton (87) fourth.

Mike Grubbs (118 pounds), Lyndon Campbell (134), Marty Kouyoumtjian (150) and Laszlo Molinar (167) will join teammate Jones in the NCAA championships held March 14-16 at the University of Iowa.

In the Long Beach track and field relays:

Buffy Rabbitt of UC Irvine was picked as the meet’s outstanding female athlete.

Rabbitt, who was fourth in the NCAA cross-county championships last fall, ran the anchor leg of Irvine’s 4 x 1,600 relay team which finished first. Rabbitt was also the anchor of the second-place distance medley relay team.

Brigid Stirling ran 3,000 meters in 9:57.92, and Matt Farmer won the long jump with a leap of 23 feet for Irvine.
