Relatives and friends of the Irish Republican Army “Birmingham Six” cheered after the chief prosecutor told an appellate court in London he would not oppose release of the men, who received life terms for 1974 pub bombings that killed 21 people and maimed 162 others. The prosecutor, Graham Boal, said the convictions of Hugh Callaghan, Johnny Walker, Patrick Hill, Richard McIlkenny, Gerry Hunter and Billy Power were no longer sound because of irregularities in police evidence.
