A suicidal man shot at a Burbank police officer Wednesday and missed, then surrendered to a sheriff’s Special Weapons Team, authorities said.

Gerald R. Baldwin, 51, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon--a 1940 German Luger pistol--after the standoff at the Buena Vista Motel in the 2200 block of North Buena Vista Street, Burbank police said.

Inside the room, officers found a note in which Baldwin said he wanted police officers to kill him, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

The motel manager called police about 2:15 p.m. to report that Baldwin had a gun and was threatening to commit suicide. When an officer arrived, Baldwin fired at him through the room’s window, police said.

Burbank police negotiated with Baldwin over the phone for several hours. He gave up about 5 p.m. when a Special Weapons Team arrived, the Sheriff’s Department said.
