A Whittier man was arrested in a Sacramento suburb in connection with the robbery, beating and strangulation of an elderly man in Los Angeles County, authorities said Wednesday.

Leslie S. Latham, 24, was wanted for the slaying of an elderly Downey man in a motel in January, Sheriff’s Deputy Roger Hom said. The suspect was arrested Tuesday after sheriff’s homicide detectives tracked him to Rocklin, 12 miles east of Sacramento, where he had fled after the slaying, Hom said.

Homicide detectives were in Rocklin obtaining a warrant to search Latham’s home and had asked local police to maintain a surveillance of the home and detain anyone leaving it, he said. About 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Latham, his common-law wife, Shannon Maximo, 19, and their two children, a 3-year-old girl and an 8-month-old boy, drove away from the home. The car was stopped and Latham was arrested.
