LAGUNA BEACH : Superintendent to Leave for New Post
School Supt. Dennis M. Smith announced Wednesday that he will be resigning to become superintendent of a San Diego County district.
Smith, 39, said it has not been decided when he will leave his $85,000-a-year job to become head of the Cajon Valley Union School District, but he expects that it will be before the end of the school year.
“I’m going to miss Laguna Beach, but Cajon Valley will provide my career with additional challenges,” said Smith, who has headed Laguna Beach Unified for five years. Cajon Valley has 17,000 students, compared to Laguna Beach’s 2,400.
Board of Education President James G. Kreder said the district will miss Smith.
“We are excited for him,” Kreder said. “It’s a great opportunity for him. . . . He has done a terrific job for us.”
Kreder said that the board will hire an executive search firm to conduct a nationwide search for Smith’s successor.
