COLLEGE BASKETBALL / WCC TOURNAMENT : San Diego Beats Gonzaga, 72-62
Kelvin Woods had game-high marks of 23 points and eight rebounds to lead third-seeded San Diego (17-11) to a 72-62 victory over No. 6-seeded Gonzaga (14-14) in the opening round of the West Coast Conference tournament Saturday.
San Diego Coach Hank Egan said that even though his team led by as many as 19 points and forced the Bulldogs into 21 turnovers, he felt fortunate to win.
St. Mary’s 79, Santa Clara 74--The Gaels came back from nine points behind at halftime to advance. Eric Bamberger scored 20 points for St. Mary’s.
St. Mary’s (12-16), which defeated the Broncos for the third time this season, will meet San Diego in a semifinal game tonight at 7:30.
