Camporese Upsets Lendl in Rotterdam
Unseeded Omar Camporese of Italy upset top-seeded Ivan Lendl, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4), to win the ABN Amro World tennis tournament Sunday.
Camporese, 22, ranked 42nd in the world, came back from a sluggish start to defeat Lendl, ranked third, in 2 hours 48 minutes.
“I think I’m dreaming,” Camporese said, adding that his game plan was to “take the lead and not give Lendl any room.”
During the second-set tiebreaker, Lendl complained to officials that “it’s hard to play” because of the noise from the crowd of approximately 8,000.
Camporese scored the winning point in the third-set tiebreaker with a lob just inside the baseline.
Lendl was coming off tournament victories at Memphis and Philadelphia the past two weeks. He said before Sunday’s match that he planned to take a five-week break before playing his next tournament at Paris.
