Calabasas Voters to Decide Cityhood Questions Today

Share

Voters in Calabasas will go to the polls today to decide whether they want to become Los Angeles County’s 88th incorporated city and to elect officials to run the proposed new municipality.

Thirteen candidates are vying for five seats on the council that will be created if the drive for cityhood is approved. Most seem to agree that the future of the new city will depend on well-managed growth, fiscal responsibility and a strong community identity. The two top vote-getters will each serve for four years; the other three will each serve for two years.

Today’s election comes after more than a decade of fighting by residents pushing for incorporation of the community east of Woodland Hills. Much of the impetus for the cityhood drive stems from a desire to have greater control over development in the area.

Council members will be elected at large, but voters also must decide today whether to elect future members at large or by district.

Polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
