A Bulgarian national was shot to death Tuesday in the driveway of his Canoga Park house by a man with whom he had argued moments earlier, Los Angeles police said.

Todor Gerinenoff, 36, was shot at least once in the head and once in the chest during the shooting about 1:20 p.m. in the 7500 block of Owensmouth Avenue, Lt. Rick Swanston said. He died at the scene, Swanston said.

Gerinenoff was holding a handgun when he died, but there was no evidence that he had fired it, Swanston said.

The shooting followed a heated argument between Gerinenoff and the other man in Gerinenoff’s driveway, Swanston said. At one point, witnesses told police, the other man got into a car, described as a gold or rust-colored sedan, and backed out of the driveway. He stopped the car, got out and started firing at Gerinenoff, according to witnesses.

The man then drove east on Cohasset Street. Police described him as heavyset and in his 30s.

Swanston said it is not known what the men were arguing about. Police said the two men might have known each other and that they had argued in a foreign language, presumably Bulgarian.

Gerinenoff, a self-employed contractor, had lived in the United States for about 10 years, Swanston said.
