San Diego police are seeking the driver of a vehicle that hit two small children who were crossing Oceanview Boulevard, killing a 9-year-old girl and injuring an 8-year-old boy.

Officer John McShane said the girl was pronounced dead at UC San Diego Medical Center after the hit-and-run accident that occurred at 4:20 p.m. Wednesday. Her playmate, Edward Davis, was taken to Children’s Hospital with a broken leg.

According to a police account of the accident, the children were crossing against the light in the 3600 block of Oceanview Boulevard when they were struck by the car as it was traveling west through the intersection on a green signal.

McShane said the car, described as a white 1966 or ’67 Chevrolet Impala with California license plates 2GBG449, did not stop. The driver was followed by an unnamed motorist on northbound Interstate 15, police said.

When the driver of the Impala realized he was being followed, he pulled off to the shoulder near Landis Street, said McShane, and the pursuing motorist stopped behind him. Police said three or four men got out of the Impala and walked toward their pursuer.

The man was restrained while one or two men from the hit-and-run vehicle slashed his tires, police said. The suspects then got back in the Impala and sped away.

Although the driver of the Impala had the right of way in the accident, he is wanted on felony hit-and-run charges for leaving the scene, McShane said.
