COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Cyphers Proves a Big Relief in Oxnard Victory

Relief pitcher Jamie Cyphers escaped from a bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth inning as Oxnard College held off Pierce, 11-8, in a Western State Conference baseball game at Oxnard on Wednesday.

Cyphers, who recorded his second save, came on with one out, two runs in, the bases loaded and Oxnard holding an 11-8 lead. He recorded the final two outs on a fly ball to left and a grounder to third.

Bryan Lovelace was three for three with a double and triple and teammate Carlos Cardenas also had three hits for Oxnard (11-9, 2-0 in WSC play).

Left fielder Carl McFadden had three hits for Pierce (7-8, 0-2).

In other baseball games:

Ventura 10, Bakersfield 5--Mitch King singled in two runs then scored on an outfield error to break a 4-4 tie in the sixth and lead host Ventura to a victory in its WSC opener.

Darrell McMillin hit his first home run for Ventura and joined teammates Anthony Romero and Dan Madsen with two hits for Ventura (14-2, 1-0).

Bakersfield is 11-7, 0-3.

Canyons 10, Glendale 2--Canyons had a season-high 18 hits in a WSC opener that matched the schools’ ace pitchers.

Canyons’ Roland De La Maza had the better of his duel with Glendale starter and loser Gary Vlcek. De La Maza (2-2) stretched his scoreless-inning streak to 22 before allowing two runs in the ninth. He struck out two and walked none.

Canyons’ Bill Horvat was four for six with two doubles and two runs batted in and teammate Jon Strauss was three for six with a double and an RBI. Ty Powell, Bobby Corrales, Robert Barrena and Walter White each had two hits for Canyons (4-9-1), which has won four of its past five games.

East Los Angeles 6, Mission 2--Visiting East Los Angeles scored five runs on four hits in the fifth to break a scoreless tie in the Southern California Athletic Conference opener.

Cuesta 8, Valley 5--Valley’s only error proved costly, leading to six unearned runs in the fourth inning at Valley. Sean Lewis, Kevin Walsh and James Weese each had two hits for Valley (4-10-1, 1-1).
