COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Mena’s Homer in 10th Saves the Day for Golden West

Brian Mena hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Golden West a 9-6 victory over Saddleback in an Orange Empire Conference baseball game at Golden West Wednesday.

Golden West (7-7, 2-1 in conference play) let a 6-0 lead slip away. Saddleback (6-9, 0-4) scored twice in the fifth, three more times in the eighth and tied it on a home run by Eric Schreifels to lead off the ninth.

Mena had two hits and five RBIs and Jason White and Steve Rath each had four hits for the Rustlers, who had 18 hits.

In another Orange Empire Conference baseball game:

Cypress 14, Orange Coast 4--Kevin Cook had two hits, including a double, and four RBIs to lead Cypress (12-4, 3-1) at Orange Coast. Cook also scored four runs. Jason Bates had two doubles and scored three runs for the Chargers.

In Orange Empire Conference softball:

Saddleback 6, Rancho Santiago 5--Rancho Santiago (4-6, 0-3) led, 3-0, but Saddleback (3-6, 1-1) scored three runs in the fourth inning, two in the fifth inning and one in the sixth. Winning pitcher Jenny Jourden (3-3) had a run-scoring double and scored a run in the fourth. Rancho Santiago scored on a two-run triple by LaTanya Trotter in the top of the seventh.

Cypress 4, Orange Coast 0--Laura Corson pitched six shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out two, for Cypress (15-6, 2-0). Cindy Hover pitched a hitless seventh. Susan Dugas had three hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs.

Fullerton 1, Golden West 0 (nine innings)--Carri Johnson’s single up the middle drove in Kirsten Schima in the bottom of the ninth for Fullerton (6-6, 3-0). Erika Ostergaard (5-4) allowed seven hits and struck out one for the Hornets.

In Orange Empire Conference golf:

Orange Coast wins--Ken Calvert shot a par 72 for host Orange Coast, which won with a score of 380 at the Costa Mesa Country Club. San Diego Mesa shot 396 to finish second, Cypress (398) was third and Saddleback (404) fourth.
