COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Walker’s Four Hits Help UCI Coast Past Cal Poly Pomona

UC Irvine took a nine-run lead after five innings and defeated Cal Poly Pomona, 13-8, in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at Pomona.

Ray Walker had four hits, scored two runs and had two runs batted in for the Anteaters (10-10). Matt Filson had two hits, scored twice and had three RBIs and Brian Young had two hits and scored two runs. Every starter had at least one hit for Irvine, which finished with 16 hits.

Pomona (7-11) scored five runs in the sixth to make it 11-8.

David Bladow (2-2) picked up the victory and Steve May got his second save with three innings of relief. Erik Gomez (2-2) took the loss, though he only gave up one run in one inning of work.

In nonconference softball:

Chapman 7-1, Cal State San Bernardino 1-2--Chapman loaded the bases in the seventh inning of the second game but could only score one run and the Panthers’ 11-game winning streak ended in the split with visiting San Bernardino. Sandy Olivas hit her sixth and seventh home runs of the season and had five RBIs in the first game for the Panthers (14-2).

Christ College Irvine 4-12, Claremont-Mudd 2-4--Kathy Carroll had three hits and two RBIs and De Brunk had two hits and two RBIs for the visiting Eagles (6-6) in the first game. Michelle Vail (2-1) allowed seven hits and struck out four. In the second game, Judy Lotton had two hits and two RBIs and Carroll had three RBIs. Lisa Merenda (3-4) allowed four hits and no earned runs.

In Big West Conference women’s tennis:

UC Irvine 8, Cal State Long Beach 1--Kelly Goldsborough won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, and Stacey Cadigan and Ali Yoshimoto won, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles for host Irvine (6-7, 2-3).
