Four county residents received recognition in Oxnard on Friday from the Mexican American Chamber of Commerce for their work in the Latino community.

“We need to recognize Hispanics and others who go above and beyond to help the Mexican-American community,” chamber President Robert Sanchez said.

Special recognition awards were presented to Mena Rios, a local businesswoman who founded the chamber’s Las Fiestas Patrias Beauty Pageant; Charles Padilla, director of the Cabrillo Music Theatre; Ruperto Cisneros, principal of Oxnard High School; and Betty Lionberger, a local businesswoman who has been involved in the chamber’s beauty pageant since 1985.

In addition, the chamber recognized Pacific Bell for its outreach efforts into the Latino community. “Pacific Bell has shown its willingness to show corporate responsibility by identifying that we have a large Hispanic community in this county by providing job opportunities and grants,” Sanchez said.

The awards were presented at the chamber’s annual installation dinner at the Oxnard Elk’s Lodge. State Assemblyman Jack O’Connell was the keynote speaker.
