And in Beijing: In Beijing, China’s Film and Television Minister, Ai Zhisheng, says that only the Chinese have the right to judge the merits of a Chinese film. The current edition of Shanghai Film Times quotes Ai as saying, “There are too many bandits, eunuchs, prostitutes and spies on the (Chinese) screen. These should not be central characters in films. This practice must be stopped. Abroad they win prizes. At home they are ridiculed.”
