Sid Fernandez of the New York Mets broke a bone in the wrist of his pitching arm Monday when he was hit by a grounder off the bat of Javier Ortiz of the Houston Astros at Port St. Lucie, Fla.

A spokesman for the Mets said Fernandez will be in a cast for six weeks and will be sidelined for up to three months.

Last season, the left-handed Fernandez was 9-14 with a 3.46 earned-run average. He has a career mark of 78-59.

“I’m just real disappointed,” Fernandez said. “It’s not a real bad break. It’s still in place. . . . It wasn’t hit that hard. It just took an overspin and came up. At least I can come back.”

The Cleveland Indians learned that first baseman Keith Hernandez must have back surgery and will miss at least half the season.

The 37-year-old Hernandez, who agreed to a $3.5 million, two-year contract with Cleveland before the 1990 season, was examined in New York last week by two doctors who supported the previous finding of the team’s orthopedic surgeon.

Team orthopedist Dr. Louis Keppler reviewed magnetic resonance imaging scans taken of Hernandez in January and concluded that Hernandez has a herniated disk in the lower back.

Relief pitcher Gregg Olson agreed to a one-year, $505,000 contract with the Baltimore Orioles, who renewed the contracts of outfielder Mike Devereaux and first baseman Randy Milligan.

Milligan, who hit 20 home runs last year before missing two months with a shoulder injury, was renewed for $230,000 after earning $155,000 last season. The club also renewed Devereaux, who batted .240 with 12 homers and 49 runs batted in over 108 games last season. He got $210,000.
