Three hundred and seventy Seabees from Port Hueneme were scheduled to return home this morning and another 230 are expected to return by the end of the week, base officials said Tuesday.
The Seabees are the first group to return since the Gulf War ended last month. A battalion of 600 men from the base will remain in the Gulf for an unknown period of time, said Connie Taylor, public affairs officer at the Naval Construction Battalion Center.
Since the beginning of the U.S. military buildup in the Middle East, Seabee engineers and construction teams have built reinforced tents, hospitals, galleys and other facilities for Marines stationed in Saudi Arabia.
At one time during the Gulf crisis, 1,800 Seabees from Port Hueneme were stationed in the desert.
