FULLERTON : GIs Will Get Free Gas and Car Washes

To congratulate local troops for victory in the Gulf War and to welcome them home, a Fullerton service station is giving away free gas and car washes to all military men and women who come to the station in uniform.

“We did it because we feel the troops deserve the best after spending those long months” in the Persian Gulf, said Oscar Hernandez, general manager of Sunny Hills Service Station, at Bastanchury Road and Harbor Boulevard.

Hernandez said he told his employees to post a notice of the gas giveaway on the station’s fluorescent sign late Sunday, when he heard that county-based troops were returning from the Gulf. The bright sign, under waving flags, reads: “All Troops in Uniform--Free Gas and Wash. Let Us Thank You.”

The station is not giving away services to get publicity, Hernandez said. Rather, “it’s for a good cause, and we feel the troops should be well-recognized.”

The station will continue to fill up tanks and wash cars for all military men and women in uniform for free until further notice, Hernandez said.
