No Apparent Reason for Traffic Stop, Court Told

An NBC television producer who followed Don Jackson the night he was stopped by two Long Beach police officers in 1989 testified Wednesday that Jackson’s car was not weaving, speeding or driving erratically.

Sam Hurst’s testimony corroborates Jackson’s allegation that the two officers stopped him for no apparent reason the night of Jan. 14, 1989. Jackson, who went to Long Beach to conduct a sting on the city’s police, claims that the officers stopped him and driver Jeff Hill because they were two black men driving an old car down Pacific Coast Highway. The officers claimed the car was weaving.

During the videotaped confrontation, which was broadcast around the country, Officer Mark Dickey appeared to push Jackson into a plate-glass window. He is charged with assault, and both he and his former partner, Mark Ramsey, are charged with falsifying a police report.
