Councilwoman Gets One Day to Collect Signature

Share

A Superior Court judge ruled Tuesday that Compton Councilwoman Jane Robbins should have one more day to collect the one signature she needs to run for reelection in April.

City Clerk Charles Davis barred Robbins from seeking her fourth full term on the council because she did not turn in the required 20 valid signatures on her nomination petition by the March 2 deadline. Two of the 21 signatures she collected proved invalid. One was not a registered voter. In the other case, a woman had signed her husband’s name.

Judge Kenneth Gale agreed with Robbins’ lawyer that under California case law Saturday is considered a holiday, meaning the deadline should have been extended until the following Monday. Robins said she was “thrilled” but her four opponents in the race are reportedly considering challenging the ruling.
