COLLEGE BASKETBALL / NATIONAL INVITATION TOURNAMENT : Providence Wins in 2 Overtimes

Chris Watts scored nine of his 15 points in the second overtime, and Providence got past James Madison, 98-93, in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament Wednesday at Providence, R.I.

The Dukes (19-10) built a 62-54 lead with 10 minutes left in regulation, but Providence (18-12) pulled even, 62-62, on Watts’ three-point shot.

Billy Coles’ two free throws gave James Madison a 77-75 lead, but Eric Murdock’s basket with 22 seconds left forced overtime.

Colorado 71, Michigan 64--Shaun Vandiver scored 17 of his 27 points in the second half and the Buffaloes rallied to defeat the Wolverines at Boulder, Colo.

Michigan (14-15) led, 25-19, after Colorado (16-13) made only 14% of its shots in the first half.

Colorado went ahead with a 19-5 run early in the second half. Demetrius Calip’s basket with 3:05 remaining pulled Michigan even, 60-60, before Vandiver scored four consecutive baskets.

Stanford 93, Houston 86--Brent Williams made five of six free throws down the stretch as the Cardinal (16-13) held off the Cougars (18-11) at Maples Pavilion.

Wisconsin 87, Bowling Green 79--Willie Simms scored 31 points, including six in overtime, and the Badgers (15-14) downed the Falcons at Madison, Wis.

Bowling Green (17-13), tied the score, 69-69, on Ed Colbert’s basket in the final seconds to send the game into overtime.

Cincinnati 82, Ball State 55--Louis Banks scored six of his 19 points in the final minute of the first half as the Bearcats (18-11) broke away en route to beating the Cardinals (21-10) at Cincinnati.

Southern Illinois 75, Boise State 74--Ashraf Amaya scored 21 points, including a basket with 10 seconds left, to lift the Salukis (17-13) to a victory over the Broncos (18-11) at Boise, Idaho.
