Cleveland Indian outfielder Alex Cole dislocated his right shoulder Thursday when he tripped coming out of the batter’s box during an exhibition game in Phoenix and will be sidelined indefinitely.

The 25-year-old center fielder, who stole 40 bases in 63 games last year as a rookie, suffered the injury while batting against the Oakland Athletics in the seventh inning. After hitting a line drive to right field, Cole turned to run to first, tripped, and landed on his right shoulder.

Cole came to Cleveland last July in a trade with the San Diego Padres and batted .300 over the last two months of the season.

Injuries: Catcher Rick Cerone of the New York Mets left Thursday’s game against Cincinnati at Port St. Lucie, Fla., because of a broken ring finger on his glove hand. He said he reached down to field a fastball by Dwight Gooden that appeared to be going in the dirt, but the ball stayed up and hit the tip of his glove, causing the fracture. “It was just a freak thing,” Cerone said. . . . Boston Red Sox right fielder Tom Brunansky will be sidelined for a couple of days because of a toe injury suffered in his back yard.

Highlights: Former Angel outfielders had good games: Chili Davis had a home run as the Minnesota Twins defeated the Chicago White Sox, 7-5, in Ft. Myers, Fla., and Devon White had three hits and drove in three runs as Toronto routed a Boston split squad, 12-3, in Dunedin, Fla. . . . Bip Roberts hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to lift the San Diego Padres to an 8-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Mark Grace’s three-run homer in the fifth had put Chicago ahead, 6-4.
