COLLEGE ROUNDUP : CS Northridge Volleyball Team Readies for UCLA With Sweep of BYU

Cal State Northridge warmed up for Saturday’s showdown with division-leading UCLA by rolling to a 15-7, 15-3, 15-5 victory over Brigham Young in a Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. match in the Matador gym Thursday.

The Matadors took just 1 hour 40 minutes to dispatch the Cougars. CSUN was especially dominant in the second game, hitting .600 as a team. The Matadors completely frustrated the Cougars, who had a team attack average of just .111 in that game.

CSUN (13-4, 6-3 in WIVA play) hit .433 for the match.

Mark Root and Coley Kyman led the way for Northridge with 10 kills each and Neil Coffman had nine kills. Raphael Tulino added seven kills and seven assists.

Ethan Watts led BYU (1-20, 0-9) with 10 kills and six block assists.

CSUN, which trails UCLA by a match in the WIVA DeGroot Division standings, will play host to the Bruins on Saturday.

BASEBALL

Glendale 5, Moorpark 1--Right-hander Dave Berkey (3-2) went the distance, scattering seven hits and striking out three as Glendale (10-9, 2-4 in conference play) won a Western State Conference game at Moorpark.

Jim Aiwasian singled twice for Glendale and John McCoy had two hits, including a double, and two runs batted in.

Billy Hall was two for four for Moorpark (8-11, 0-6).

Oxnard 9, Santa Monica 5 (13 innings)--Carlos Cardenas and Jeremy Herider each had run-scoring singles in the 13th inning of a WSC game at Santa Monica.

Cardenas was four for five with a triple and two RBIs. Bryan Lovelace had two hits and three RBIs and Steve Hernandez had two hits and scored twice for Oxnard (14-10, 5-1).

Cuesta 12, Canyons 6--Canyons committed six errors, including four in the fourth inning that led to six unearned runs in a WSC game at Cuesta.

Pat DeBoer had three hits and Bill Horvat and Robert Corrales each had two for Canyons (9-10-1, 6-1), which suffered its first loss in conference play.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge 1-1, Nittaidai (Japan) 0-0--Beth Calcante singled home Kelly Martin with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning of the second game to give the host Matadors an exhibition sweep over a team from Japan.

The rally made a winner of Pamela Barr, who pitched six innings of two-hit relief. Starter Cami Allen pitched the first four innings, allowing three hits.

Heather Lindstrom allowed just one hit in going the distance for Northridge in the opener. Calcante drove in Martin with the winning run in that game as well, delivering a fourth-inning single to break the shutout.

TENNIS

Cal State Northridge 5, Sacramento State 4--Cindy Nielson and Michelle Reed scored straight-set victories in singles play, then combined for a straight-set victory in doubles as Cal State Northridge edged the Hornets at CSUN.

Nielson knocked off Kelley Borcich, 6-1, 6-2, and Reed rolled over Michelle Van Dyke, 6-2, 6-0, in singles play. Gabriela Knizek was the only other Matador winner in singles, downing Christy Karau 6-2, 3-6, 6-0.

As a team, Reed and Nielson swept Lelisa Walters and Karau, 6-2, 7-6.

Northridge is 6-9.
