COLLEGE ROUNDUP : One Titan Wrestler Advances in NCAA

Cal State Fullerton heavyweight David Jones defeated John Oostendorp of Iowa, 10-9, Thursday in the second round of the NCAA wrestling championships at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Jones, who received a bye in the first round, was the only Titan wrestler to advance in the championship bracket.

Fullerton’s Michael Grubbs, who won his first-round match at 118 pounds, was beaten by Adam Derengowski of Rider, 16-2, in the second round. Marty Kouyoumtjian, who won in the first round at 150 pounds, lost to Ken Ramsey of Ohio State, 8-3.

Kouyoumtjian later won a consolation match. Of the four Fullerton wrestlers--Jeff Maes (126), Lyndon Campbell (134) and Laszlo Molinar (167) and Ramon Diaz (177)--that lost in the first or preliminary round, only Diaz won his consolation match, a 6-0 decision of Mike Caro of Navy.

In the National Bible College men’s basketball tournament:

Pacific Christian 73, Calvary Baptist (Mo.) 70--Mike Vincent and Kenny Crawford each scored 18 for Pacific Christian (31-18), which trailed 39-28 at the half and by as many as 14 points in the second half before rallying.

In nonconference baseball games:

UC Irvine 3, Portland 2--Matt Filson’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie for host Irvine (13-12). Chris Huber (4-3) allowed eight hits and walked two and stuck out five for the complete-game victory.

Christ College Irvine 4-4, Loyola Marymount 2-1--Christ College (12-8) swept the doubleheader behind the complete game pitching of Michelle Vail (4-2), who pitched a five-hitter in the first game, and Lisa Merenda (5-5), who had a four-hitter in the second. In nonconference men’s tennis:

UC Irvine 5, Kansas 3--Irvine’s Jeff Miyamoto trailed Paul Garvin 6-2, 4-0 in the No. 4 singles match before winning 12 of the last 13 games to post a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory to lead host Irvine (9-3) past No. 21 Kansas (9-6).
