COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Irvine Men’s Tennis Team Beats No. 10 Kentucky

UC Irvine defeated 10th-ranked Kentucky, 5-2, in a men’s tennis match Saturday at the UC Irvine tennis stadium.

UC Irvine, ranked 20th, won for the fifth consecutive time. Mike Roberts, Brett Hansen-Dent, Brett Stern and Randy Ivey won in singles for Irvine (10-3). Carsten Hoffman and Hansen-Dent won in doubles, 6-2, 6-4, to clinch the match.

Irvine, which defeated 19th-ranked Miami Friday, plays host to Clemson at 1 p.m. today.

In the NCAA wrestling championships:

Titan heavyweight fourth--Senior David Jones ended up fourth in the finals at the University of Iowa. Jones defeated Kirk Mammen of Oklahoma State, 14-5, but lost to Sylvester Terkay of North Carolina State, 9-7, in the match to decide third place.

In nonconference baseball:

Fullerton 12, California 5--Frank Charles had a three-run home run and a two-run single as Fullerton (14-12) won at Berkeley. The Titans’ Steve Sico had four hits, including a double and a home run.

Fullerton scored four runs in the eighth to break a 5-5 tie. Frank Herman walked with the bases loaded to force in the go-ahead run, and Phil Nevin walked to put the Titans up, 7-5. Charles then singled in two more runs. Jack Bailey (2-1) pitched 5 1/3 innings in relief.

In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:

Southern California College 8-7, Westmont 0-0--Mike Castle pitched a one-hit shutout and struck out eight in the first game at SCC. Donny Harrell hit a home run and a double to knock in three runs and scored four times. In the second game, Brett Johnson pitched his second consecutive shutout, a three-hitter with eight strikeouts. Doug Rystrom hit a home run and a single and scored twice for SCC (9-9, 3-2).

In Big West Conference softball:

Cal State Fullerton 4-1, San Jose State 2-0--In the first game, Fullerton’s Jstone Vines had an RBI single for one run and Fullerton scored twice more on a throwing error in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. Ann Van Dortrecht (9-1) pitched a five-hitter in the second game. Mich DeBree had a triple and Kelly Hunt followed with a RBI single in the first inning for the Titans (24-7, 7-2).

In nonconference women’s softball:

Chapman 8, Missouri Rolla 1--Cheri Schreck (11-2) pitched a two-hitter to help Chapman (23-2) sweep its nine games in the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando, Fla. Trina Honea had two singles and two RBIs. Julia Webb added two singles an RBI and two runs scored.

In the National Bible College Basketball Championships:

Pacific Christian College 89, Manhattan (Kansas) Christian College 75--Mike Vincent had 25 points and 13 rebounds to lead Pacific Christian (31-18) to third place in the eight-team tournament.

In Big West Conference men’s track and field:

UC Irvine wins four-way meet--Matt Farmer won the long jump (23-10) and the triple jump (47-4 1/2), was second in the high jump (6-7 1/2) and fourth in the javelin (165-5) for host Irvine, which had 163 points.
