Etienne Decroux; Director, Drama Teacher

Etienne Decroux, 92, an actor, director and drama teacher whose pupils included world-renowned mime Marcel Marceau. Decroux began his career as an actor in 1923 and soon took a special interest in mime. During the 1930s, he staged many of his own productions. His close collaborators included one of the giants of modern French theater, Jean-Louis Barrault. He also worked abroad on several occasions, including a stint in New York City in the late 1950s and early 1960s, when he taught at the Actors’ Studio, the New School and New York University.
