Council OKs 9-House Subdivision in Canyon

The Glendale City Council on Tuesday approved a plan to build a nine-house subdivision on a Chevy Chase Canyon hillside after the developer agreed to reduce the project’s size by one-fourth.

Vahan Bezdikian last year proposed building 12 houses off Somerset Road on about five of 11 acres of chaparral and oak forest. But the city Planning Commission rejected the proposal, citing concerns by canyon homeowners about potential environmental damage, increased traffic and the high risk of fires.

The council this week voted to allow nine houses after Bezdikian dropped a plan opposed by homeowners to pave a nearby dirt road. The developer also agreed to donate the remaining six acres of land to the city as open space.
