SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Aretha Franklin, Garth Brooks, Diana Ross and Frank Sinatra are among the most prominent names in the spring through fall line-ups announced Thursday for the Greek Theatre and the Universal Amphitheatre.

Franklin’s show at the Greek (date still to be announced) will be the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s first Los Angeles concert in eight years, while Brooks’ June 29 appearance at the Universal marks the hot country newcomer’s leap to headlining status. And a July Greek appearance by Sinatra will be just one special event planned to celebrate the Griffith Park open-air theater’s 60th year.

Besides Franklin’s show, the Greek’s season is topped by an Amnesty International benefit “Country Rights” show (also TBA), concerts by country singers Hank Williams Jr. (May 11) and George Strait (Aug. 11) and such pop stars as Liza Minnelli (Aug. 30 and 31). Capping the 60th anniversary celebration will be a gala finale in either September or October, details for which will be announced next month.

The Universal schedule shows the same balance, with Ross’ engagement (July 25-28), the debut headlining tour by rising country star Garth Brooks (June 29), a two-night stand by Bonnie Raitt and John Hiatt (Oct. 18 and 19) and a return of last year’s successful KROQ Acoustic Christmas show (Dec. 20).

Begining today, sign-ups will be taken for the Greek’s Premiere Club subscription plan (any six or more shows) through (213) 957-3015. Universal orders for both the preferred ATOP plan and individual shows will go for one week only starting Sunday through Ticketmaster at (213) 480-3232. Over-the-counter sales for shows at both 6,000-seat facilities will be announced on a show-by-show basis, usually a month or two before each event.

Representatives of both the Greek and the Universal cited the residual impact of the Gulf War and doubts about the economy as shaping artists touring plans.

“The war affected the attention spans of everybody in January and February when plans were being made,” said Alex Hodges, vice president in charge of West Coast concert operations for the Nederlander organization, which runs the Greek. “It affected people in the sense of juggling schedules or postponing or waiting to see if the war would be long-term, or if fear of terrorism might alter European touring plans.”

Missy Worth, the Universal’s director of booking, agreed: “A lot of artists were waiting to find out what would happen with the war and the recession. A lot of troops over there are people who would be going to see shows. There are parts of the country, like the Midwest, where that’s a big part of the audience and that affected tour plans.”
