A transient pleaded not guilty Friday in South Bay Municipal Court to an assault charge after she allegedly stabbed another woman repeatedly during a scuffle over a sleeping area.

Jinine Lambright, 21, had blood on her hands and clothes when she was arrested by Hermosa Beach police officers early Thursday morning, Detective Bruce Phillips said.

The victim, Wilma Pan, 52, was treated at South Bay Hospital in Redondo Beach and transferred to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Phillips said. She suffered between 10 and 15 stab wounds on her hands and arms and a single stab wound in her chest.

Lambright told police that she and a male companion were sleeping in a storage area underneath a convenience store in the 2600 block of Manhattan Avenue when someone tried to take her blanket. She said she fought back with a five-inch folding knife she had been holding in her hand as she slept.
