3 OCC Students Picked for Rockwell Internships

Orange Coast College sophomores Julie Botas of La Habra and Dan Hepp of Orange and freshman Paul Haw of Newport Beach have been selected for a new internship program sponsored by Rockwell International in Newport Beach.

The three will work 14 hours a week at the plant this spring as equipment-repair technicians.

OCC electronics technology professor Robert J. Hancock said that Rockwell is having difficulty finding qualified individuals to fill technician positions.

Huntington Beach resident Mary Elizabeth Howell, an investor, researcher, accountant, administrator and homemaker, has been named Woman of the Year by the American Biographical Institute Research Assn. based in Raleigh, N.C.

Cypress resident Mark L. Corsi was awarded a Gold Medal in the automotive-collision category in the recent California Regional Skills Olympics sponsored by the California State Vocational Clubs of America. He now advances to state competition April 25 in Sacramento.

Santa Ana Ana Heights residents Donna and John Crean have been presented the Newport-Costa Mesa Family YMCA Heritage Preservation Award, which recognizes their donated time and financial support for the group. It was the first time the award has been given.

Christopher Looney, a senior at Sunny Hills High School in Fullerton, was presented a $10,000 scholarship for winning the Share the Dream essay contest sponsored by the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Los Angeles.

In February, high school students were invited to submit essays on “The Value of Education Within the Context of Black History Month.”

Looney, who was presented his scholarship by Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, is eligible for an additional $15,000 scholarship in a final contest in Atlanta later this year.

Charles Coleman Jr., 44, a 14-year Fullerton firefighter, was named Firefighter of the Year by the Fullerton Firefighters’ Assn. Coleman, a former Marine who served in Vietnam, is a Santa Ana resident.

Jerry Chris, a Mission Viejo resident and English and humanities teacher at Mission Viejo High School, was named Teacher of the Year by the California Assn. for the Gifted at the group’s state conference in Sacramento.

Chris, author of three books on student understanding and motivation, is a mentor teacher for at-risk students in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District.

Senior-citizen volunteer Marge Madigan of San Juan Capistrano has been named Citizen of the Year by the San Juan Chamber of Commerce. She edits, types and puts out the Senior Outpost newsletter.

Football players Brian Haas, Jeremy Hogue and Rob Johnson, all of El Toro High School, have been honored as scholar athletes by the Orange County chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame.

Hogue, with a grade-point average of 4.01, was named to the All-South Coast League, All-County and Big West teams; Johnson, with a 3.73 GPA, was named to the All-County, All-CIF and All-South Coast teams, and Haas, with a 3.57 GPA, was named to the All-South Coast League, All-County and All-CIF teams.
