An Anaheim man who tried to retrieve an antique table that fell from his truck onto the freeway shoulder was struck Friday by a motorist who appeared to hit him on purpose, authorities said.

Greg Delmonico, 32, was seriously injured in the 3:40 p.m. incident, which occurred on the northbound Santa Ana Freeway south of the South Street exit, said California Highway Patrol spokeswoman Linda Burrus.

Burrus said Delmonico and his wife, Kim, who is eight months pregnant, had just bought the changing table and were taking it home when it fell off their Ford Ranchero. When Delmonico went to retrieve it, three young men in a Ford Fairlane pulled out of the slow, heavy traffic and hit him with the right front of their car.

“Witnesses said they saw (the men) laughing after they hit Delmonico,” Burrus said.

One driver followed the tan Fairlane off the freeway and managed to take down a license plate number of 2DEF328, she said.
