California IN BRIEF : HAYWARD : 27 Rail Cars Derail, Cut Phone Service
Railway officials said it will be several days before they are able to clear tracks where 27 cars derailed Saturday, dumping a load of lumber, particle board and frozen chickens destined for Los Angeles. No one was injured when the cars slid off the tracks at 6 a.m. near Industrial Parkway in Hayward, said Jerry Pera, spokesman for Southern Pacific railway. However, the accident disrupted long-distance service for an undetermined number of Sprint customers. Sprint runs fiber-optic cables under the tunnel, a spokesman said. Pera said inspectors believe the train’s brakes froze up, causing a wheel to skip off the tracks.
