Claremont Second At NCAA Swim Finals

Kenyon College of Ohio won its 12th consecutive NCAA Division III title, more than any team at any level in the history of the NCAA, by scoring 593.5 points at the national swimming championships in Atlanta. Claremont took second (280 points) and UC San Diego third (271), the ninth straight year UCSD has finished among the top three.

UCSD freshman Travis Miller, from San Marino, won for the second straight day, taking the 200-yard backstroke in 1:51.32. Miller also won the 100 back, the only victories posted by UCSD. He had two firsts, a second and was on relay teams that had a second and three fourth-place finishes. He was edged out of swimmer of the meet by Brian Zimmer of Carnegie Mellon.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Mimi Burgos, the San Diego Section player of the year in 1986 for University City High, beat SDSU’s Dorey Brandt, 6-4, 6-4 in No. 1 singles as Clemson beat the visiting Aztecs, 5-2. Paige Hammond and Tanya Lauer, playing Nos. 5 and 6 singles, were the only winners for SDSU (7-7). Hammond beat Julie Davis in three sets, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, and Lauer beat Amy Hise, 6-4, 6-2. Clemson is 8-7. The Aztecs play South Carolina today.

BASEBALL

Visiting Santa Clara scored one run in the seventh and two in the eighth to beat University of San Diego, 3-2, in the second game of a doubleheader. Santa Clara scored six runs int he fourth inning and won the first game, 12-2.

San Diego State moved to 18-7, 3-0 in the Western Athletic Conference, by sweeping a doubleheader against Colorado State at Smith Field. The Aztecs came back to win the opener, 8-5, and took the nightcap, 6-5, as Joe Duggan (2-0) got both wins in relief. SDSU climbed back from a 5-1 deficit in the opener with four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth, highlighted by Derek Vinyard’s two-run single. In the second game, the Aztecs scored three runs in the second and fifth innings, and Jerry Stafford picked up his first save by stranding two runners and getting the final out in the Rams’ two-run seventh. CSU slipped to 8-12, 0-3.

U.S. International (7-21) gave up nine runs in the first inning and four more in the second and suffered its worst loss of the year in a 21-2 setback at UC Santa Barbara (18-9-1). Santa Barbara had 19 hits in the game and took advantage of five USIU errors. USIU also lost the first game of the nonconference doubleheader, 8-2.

Point Loma Nazarene split a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader at Westmont, dropping the opener, 5-4, and winning nightcap, 5-3. The Warriors loaded the bases off losing pitcher Mark Ratekin (3-5) then got a two-run bloop single by John Kinnamen off reliever Tom Martin in the bottom of the eighth.

The Crusaders (11-15, 1-7) came back with four runs in the top of the first in the second game. Rich Miller, Jason Huntley and Galen Ishii each had RBI doubles off loser Jim Lester (1-4), who was lifted with two outs in the first. Dion Dice (2-3) pitched six innings for the victory. Westmont is 10-15, 1-6.

MEN’S TENNIS

USD was eliminated from the Blue Grey Collegiate Classic with a 5-3 defeat to Mississippi State in the second round of consolation play. The Toreros (9-11), who split the singles matches, 3-3, fell after 19th-ranked Jose Luis Noriega and Kevin Bradley were upset by unranked Daniel Courcol and Christophe Damiens, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Mike Mattarocci and Sean Clark each had 14 kills as third-ranked SDSU defeated 10th-ranked UC Santa Barbara, 7-15, 15-9, 15-5, 15-9, to win the Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne Tournament. Tournament MVP Mike Schlegel added 11 kills for the Aztecs, who improved to 15-3. The Gouchos are 9-11.

SOFTBALL

Tiffany Wasilewski (6-2), a sophomore from Mission Bay High, threw a three-hitter and Staci Roper had two RBIs to give University of San Diego a 3-2 victory at Christ College Irvine. Marianne Stahl also had two hits and an RBI. Roper was the losing pitcher in the second game, 4-2. USD (11-8) scored twice in the top of the seventh but the game ended with the tying run at first base. Julie Doria had two hits and scored for USD.

TRACK AND FIELD

UCSD’s women easily captured first place in the UC San Diego Spring Break Meet, outscoring second-place St. Olaf, 97-32. The Triton men (70 points) finished second to Redlands (80.5).

GYMNASTICS

Jenna Herrmann took another step toward national recognition as she captured first place in the all-around, uneven bars and balance beam and second place in the vault to win the California Level 9 State Gymnastics Championships’ Children’s Division at the National Training Center in Laguna Hills. Her SDSU Aztecs team finished second to New Hope of Fountain Valley, 109.15-108.95. Herrmann, Wendy Ick, Tamara Espinoza and Michelle George each advanced to the regional championships, April 7 at SDSU’s Peterson Gym.
