Share

An elderly woman was struck and killed Sunday night, apparently by a hit-and-run driver, police said.

Mary Bakefelt, 80, of Fullerton was found by the side of the road in the 3000 block of Mulberry Avenue about 8:15 p.m., Sgt. Gary Miller said.

She apparently had been walking near her residence and was hit by a vehicle, Miller said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said a “possible involved driver” contacted them later Sunday night, but he was not arrested pending further investigation.

Sgt. Roger White said it was uncertain whether charges would be filed in the case because the driver said he thought that he had hit an animal.

Bakefelt is survived by her husband, Robert G. Bakefelt, 78, according to an employee at Neels Brea Mortuary. No funeral service is planned.
