Storm Causes Power Outage, Road Closure

Share

The storm system that continued to drop much-needed rain on the Southland Monday caused few problems in area valleys, other than an isolated, short-lived power outage and a brief closure of the Golden State Freeway north of Gorman.

About 125 households in Arleta near the intersection of Osborne Street and Canterbury Avenue were without electricity for about 1 1/2 hours beginning about 2 a.m., said a Department of Water and Power spokeswoman. The cause of the outage was undetermined.

The freeway was closed at the Grapevine about 12:20 a.m. Monday because of heavy snow, Caltrans reported. The road was reopened 30 minutes later for vehicles escorted by California Highway Patrol officers, and the road was clear beneath sunny skies by sunrise.

Snow was also reported on the Antelope Valley Freeway near the Escondido Canyon Road exit, California Highway Patrol Officer Ken Arguelles said.

The storm dropped up to an inch of rain at low elevations and up to two inches at higher elevations during the night, and mountain areas received two to four inches of snow.
