Montebello : Parents Urge Board to Keep 55 Bilingual Teaching Jobs

Share

Spanish-speaking parents have asked the Montebello Board of Education to keep about 55 bilingual teachers who may lose their jobs because of budget cuts.

The 55 teachers are part of a total 161 teachers with temporary status who received letters from the school district in early March informing them that their contracts may not be renewed. The Montebello Unified School District has about 325 credentialed bilingual teachers.

The district may slash more than $9 million from next year’s budget, Assistant Supt. Walter Popkin said, but is doing all it can to retain the bilingual teachers.
