BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : Yankees Say Bye-Bye to Steve Balboni
Slugger Steve Balboni was placed on waivers Monday by the New York Yankees, who will pay the remaining $1.1 million of his contract.
Balboni, 34, hit .154 with one home run and five runs batted in this spring. He batted .192 with 17 home runs and 34 RBIs in 266 at-bats with the Yankees last year, when he was used primarily as a designated hitter and pinch-hitter.
Balboni was guaranteed $900,000 in 1990 and $900,000 in 1991. The Yankees had an option for 1992 at $1.1 million with a guaranteed $200,000 buyout.
Balboni played in parts of five seasons with the Yankees. He also played for the Kansas City Royals and Seattle Mariners. He has 181 home runs and 495 RBIs in his career.
