The Chicago White Sox have called a news conference for this morning, and ESPN reported the club will announce the signing of Bo Jackson.

Jackson was released by the Kansas City Royals March 18 after team physician Steve Joyce determined a hip injury that Jackson suffered while playing for the Raiders would not allow the outfielder to play baseball this season.

White Sox officials in Sarasota would not confirm the report late Tuesday night.

White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf, asked Tuesday afternoon about rumors that the team would sign Jackson, said the situation was up to Jackson’s agent, Richard Woods. Reinsdorf said that when Jackson decided which team he wanted to sign with, the deal would be completed within two hours.

“One way or another it would be quick,” Reinsdorf said.

Reached at his hotel late Tuesday night, Reinsdorf would neither confirm nor deny the report.

Joyce said he did not believe Jackson would be able to play. But James Andrews, a leading orthopedic specialist, examined Jackson and did not rule out a return to pro sports.

ESPN also reported Tuesday night that Jackson’s hip problem might not be as bad as initially feared.
