Ruling Clears Long Beach in Allowing Huge Project
A state appeals court has ruled that the city of Long Beach broke no environmental laws when it approved construction of one of the nation’s largest urban renewal projects, scheduled to be built at the oceanside site of the old Pike amusement park.
Environmentalists, joined by an opinion from former Atty. Gen. John K. Van de Kamp, have been fighting construction of the “city within a city” development for nearly two years, saying it will overpower the downtown area with traffic and air pollution.
The 2nd District Court of Appeal in Los Angeles ruled this week that the city acted in “bona fide good faith” to consider the environmental consequences, in accordance with state law. The first phase of the $1-billion, 13-acre Pike project--a complex of ocean-view condominiums, shops and offices--is scheduled to break ground late next year.
