Selleck Strikes Out: Actor Tom Selleck, researching a movie role as an aging ballplayer going to play in Japan, struck out as a Detroit Tigers pinch-hitter in an exhibition game against the World Series champion Cincinnati Reds Wednesday night at Lakeland, Fla. The record crowd of 7,210 was on its feet and roaring from the moment Selleck appeared in the on-deck circle to bat for Rob Deer. With flashbulbs popping and fans cheering on every pitch, Selleck managed to foul off two Tim Layana pitches before swinging and missing a knuckle curve.
