A man suspected of robbing a San Diego bank was apprehended Thursday after he was tackled by a man who saw him attempting to flee, officials said.

Officer John McShane said a man wearing a baseball cap at 3:45 p.m. entered a Wells Fargo branch on Mission Center Road and told a teller he had a gun. He fled with an unknown amount of cash and was seen departing in a cab.

A few minutes later, officers spotted a taxi of the right description, pulled it over and ordered the passenger out. The passenger complied, but then reached back into the car, prompting one of the officers to discharge his gun. The suspect then fled on foot, but an unidentified onlooker collared him not far away.

John Leslie Hanna, 20, was arrested on suspicion of robbery. McShane said that, despite Hanna’s apparel, authorities do not believe he is the so-called “A’s Bandit,” a serial robber who often wears a cap bearing the Oakland Athletics’ insignia.
