Mitchell Marcus; Retired CSUN Professor

A memorial service is planned Sunday for Mitchell Marcus, a retired English professor who taught at Cal State Northridge for 31 years.

A longtime Brentwood resident, Marcus died March 19 of complications of heart and lung failure, said his wife, Helen Helms Marcus. He was 73.

Marcus taught at the University of Iowa, University of Nebraska, Stanford University, UCLA and Los Angeles State College before moving to the Northridge campus in 1956 as a founding faculty member. A former English department chairman, he served on the CSUN Faculty Senate and the California State Faculty Senate. He retired in 1987.

Marcus was a member of the CSUN Arts Council, Faculty Club of CSUN, Arnold Schoenberg Institute at USC, Friends of English at UCLA, Modern Language Assn., Music Center Opera League and the Opera Associates.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, daughters Helen Marie Marcus of Berkeley and Mary Ellen Marcus of San Francisco, and two grandsons.

A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Community Church of Santa Monica, 1260 18th St. Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
