Hostage Anderson Wins Press Award
Terry A. Anderson, the longest-held Western hostage in Lebanon, was named the 1991 recipient of the University of Arizona’s John Peter Zenger Award, officials announced Wednesday.
Anderson, chief Middle East correspondent for the Associated Press, is the 36th winner of the award commemorating the colonial printer who went to prison to defend his right to publish.
Anderson, 36, was kidnaped on March 16, 1985, on a Beirut street. Shiite Muslims identifying themselves as members of the Islamic Jihad, or Islamic Holy War, claimed responsibility.
