Diamond Bar residents who served in the Persian Gulf will be welcomed home by an honor guard during the city’s second birthday celebration at Diamond Bar High School on Saturday.

The event will also feature a softball tournament, a local business exposition, a cake-cutting ceremony and entertainment by community groups.

An emergency preparedness fair sponsored by the Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management will cover earthquake preparedness and fire prevention.

Operation Homecoming, a six-hour musical event to welcome home troops from the Persian Gulf War, is being planned for the Rose Bowl on May 16, Pasadena city directors were informed Tuesday.

More than 40,000 people are expected to attend the event, being organized by Chris Gibbs of Santa Monica, producer of a troop send-off in December at the Marine Corps base at Camp Pendleton, said Rose Bowl manager Greg Asbury.

The Pasadena rally “could turn into a major national event,” said City Director William Paparian. Satellite broadcasts are being planned to troops still in the Persian Gulf. The Pasadena event will be coordinated with a Los Angeles parade the next day, Paparian said.

Tickets are expected to cost about $21, with admittance free for those in the military, Asbury said. Proceeds will benefit charities, he added.
