Mitch Williams Traded to Phillies; Incaviglia a Tiger, Gossage a Ranger
Some familiar names have new uniforms today.
The Philadelphia Phillies acquired left-handed reliever Mitch Williams from the Chicago Cubs Sunday night for minor-league pitchers Chuck McElroy and Bob Scanlan.
Williams was expected to report to the Phillies in time for the opener this afternoon against the Mets in New York.
Outfielder Pete Incaviglia, released by Texas last week, agreed to a one-year deal with the Detroit Tigers. Incaviglia, 27, hit .233 with 24 home runs and 85 runs batted in last season with the Rangers. He struck out 146 times.
The Rangers filled out their roster by signing infielder Denny Walling and purchasing the contracts of four non-roster players, including reliever Goose Gossage.
The Rangers said free agent Brian Downing, who is still bothered by a fracture in his right hand, will continue to work out with the team and will sign a major league contract and be activated when he is healthy.
