COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Herman’s Grand Slam Helps Titans Put the Broom to Pacific

Frank Herman’s sixth-inning grand slam helped Cal State Fullerton defeat University of the Pacific, 12-7, Sunday and gain a three-game sweep of their Big West Conference baseball series at Amerige Park in Fullerton.

Trailing, 7-5, after Pacific scored five runs in the sixth, Fullerton responded with five of its own in the bottom half of the inning, including the big blow by Herman, his seventh home run of the season. Herman had three hits and six runs batted in. The Titans (20-15, 5-1 in conference) scored two more in the seventh and remained one game behind first-place Fresno State.

Chris Powell, Trevor Rush and Matt Hattabaugh, who hit a bases-empty home run in the fourth inning, each had three hits and Rush had three RBIs.

Steve Sisco failed to get a hit, ending his hitting streak at 19 games. Sisco was hitless in four at-bats, but walked and scored a run.

In another Big West Conference game:

Fresno State 6, UC Irvine 3--Fresno spotted the Anteaters a three-run lead, then scored five runs in the fifth inning in completing their three-game series sweep at Irvine. Mike Goodcase hit his fourth home run of the season in the second and Brian Young and Steve Ott had RBI singles in the fourth to give Irvine (17-20, 1-5) a 3-0 lead.

Jason Wood’s three-run triple in the fifth was the big hit for Fresno (24-11, 6-0).

In Big West Conference men’s tennis:

Fresno State 5, UC Irvine 3--Fresno’s No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams defeated teams from Irvine as the unranked Bulldogs (11-8) upset the Anteaters (15-6), who were ranked 13th in the nation.
