The Angels are close to an agreement with the city of Tempe, Ariz., that would make Diablo Stadium their spring training home beginning in 1993.

Club President Richard Brown said an architectural report estimated the cost of modifications on the stadium to be $3 million, which would be paid by Tempe.

“As soon as they tell us yes, we’re going to go ahead and do it,” Brown said. “I’d say there’s a 90% chance it will be wrapped in six weeks. The 10% reflects that they haven’t said, ‘Yeah, we’re willing to spend the money.”’

Brown reiterated the Angels’ insistence on an escape clause should the Cactus League fall below six teams.
