Three 17-year-old boys pleaded not guilty to 12 felony charges stemming from a crime rampage that ended when one of their companions was shot to death in Sylmar by an off-duty Los Angeles police detective, prosecutors said Thursday.

The boys, whose names were not released because of their ages, were each charged with five counts of robbery, six counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of attempted robbery, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Robert Cohen.

The three teen-agers are scheduled to appear in court April 23. The robbery attempt occurred last Friday as Salvador Gallegos, a veteran homicide detective with the Devonshire Division, was making a call from a pay phone at Foothill Boulevard and Maclay Street, police said. A 15-year-old emerged from a van carrying four other boys and pointed a .25-caliber pistol at Gallegos, who then fired several shots at the boy, hitting him in the neck, police said.
